WHAT IS FLYWHEEL CHATTER?

Flywheel chatter is usually unavoidable with any lightweight single mass flywheel. Single mass means the flywheel doesn’t have a damper material between the attachment to the engine’s drive plate and the portion the clutch attaches to. The upside to single mass flywheels is they can actually be resurfaced. They are also more reliable in the long run. The damper material in dual mass flywheels wears out over time and puts slack in the driveline, which affects throttle response.

The cause of clutch chatter is actually related to the engine. The engine speed isn’t actually perfectly smooth as it spins. As it accelerates and decelerates, it takes the flywheel with it. When you’re in neutral with the clutch engaged (pedal undepressed), the clutch/FW link the engine to the transmission. The lash in the gears/shafts in the transmission bounces back/forth with the varying engine speed, making a tapping noise. The heavier the flywheel the more resistant to chatter it is, but the only way to avoid chatter completely is by going with an OEM-style dual mass flywheel. Chatter just comes with the territory when moving to a performance flywheel.
