This exclusive repair kit is another cost effective repair solution for your B6-B7 S4 brought to you by the V8 specialists at JHMotorsports! Not only will our repair kit fix your bad mechanical adjuster, it costs half the price of the brand new, OEM mechanical adjuster!!! (As of 5-15-2014, retail pricing was $745.50 per adjuster unit). If that wasn’t enough, our part is better than OEM and will prevent future premature wear issues.
The 4.2L 40v V8 in the B6-B7 S4 (and some C5-A6 allroads), is notorious for having a failure prone timing chain system. One of the most problematic pieces of this system is the mechanical cam adjuster. These adjusters are located on the end of each intake camshaft. This mechanical cam adjuster moves the cams to optimize the airflow into the combustion chambers either at idle and low speeds or for top end, high-rpm power.
The mechanical cam adjuster is essentially a two piece unit but in true Audi fashion, you can’t buy the pieces separately! One piece or side of the adjuster has a hardened pin on it (shown in the picture below).
At lower RPM and idle that pin is driven into the hole located on the sprocket side of the adjuster – the part of the adjuster that we replace in our repair kit. This optimizes the camshaft profile for idle and low speed engine operation. At higher RPM, oil pressure is applied to the mechanical adjuster via the electric actuator to release the pin which retards the camshaft slightly to provide more top end power. The hole on the sprocket side of the adjuster begins to wallow out and the pin can no longer stay in the hole when it is supposed to. This has the effect of making the motor run like it would if you had a ‘race cam’ running at idle – you get a lot of misfires and low compression numbers on the bank or banks of the motor with the bad actuator.
On motors with camshaft adjusters that are really far worn out, the bad adjusters can cause a loud clacking or knocking noise on startup. This noise is worse than the normal chain rattle. Eventually, a bad mechanical adjuster will cause the ECU to have one or more of the following codes:
– 16405 – Bank 2: Camshaft A (Intake), P0021 – 008 – Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)
– 17755 – Camshaft Position Sensor 2 (G163) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28), P1347 – 001 – Incor. Correl.
– 17748 – Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28), P1340 – 001 – Incor. Correlation
The failure of these adjusters shown above is the result of a quality control issue with Audi’s tolerance range for the hardness of the metal used to make the sprocket side of the adjuster. As shown above, the tolerances can vary by so much that even the same car can have an adjuster on one side of the motor that’s wearing normally while the other adjuster has completely failed. This is exactly what our JHM Mechanical Adjuster Repair Kit was designed to address. The JHM Mechanical Adjuster Sprocket is precision ground, CNC machined, and harder than the OEM unit it replaces.
TESTING AND INSTALLATION:
We have been testing our mechanical adjusters since early 2013 and the results have been great. They install just like the factory cam sprocket. All you have to do is disassemble your OEM adjuster unit, discard the failed sprocket piece, replace it with the JHM precision ground and CNC machined unit, and re-assemble the adjuster!
See our Informational and Installation video below for a demonstration on disassembling your adjusters, reassembling with the JHM unit, and checking the reassembled part for functionality:
ABOUT THE B6-B7 S4 TIMING CHAIN SERVICE:
The local Audi service departments we talk to recommend performing this service when your vehicle reaches 100,000 miles, with that being said we’ve seen symptoms of various forms of timing chain failures much sooner than that. With that being said the chain system on these cars should technically last the ‘lifetime” of the car but unfortunately for our customers the engineers who designed this setup were wrong and failures occur regularly much earlier than even 100k. We are just here to help with parts and information to help you make your own decision based on the actual facts of what happened with these cars in the real world. This is in addition to the calls we receive from our customers on a weekly basis regarding some form of timing chain issue with their car. We have regularly seen the famous chain knock on cold start with cars that are quite new. This has been accepted by most due to its normalcy. The big concern is when they knock on warm restarts and can slap and damage other components or collapse at high rpm. We have also seen complete failures of guides and or the mechanical cam adjuster as early as 50k to 80k. Guide failures can lead to more damage to other components. If you have one mechanical cam adjuster fail, it causes one half of the motor to miss fire and sometimes damages the very pricey electric cam adjuster actuator which is included in our FULL and FULL plus kit. With that being said if your car has made it to 100k with minor or no issues it isn’t a bad idea to do the service regardless to prevent damage to other components or getting stranded by a car running on half the cylinders. We see and hear of VERY few that fail in the 110k plus range. That doesn’t mean they do not last on some cars, we just get more calls and local work on cars under 100k.
These kits include everything needed to perform the recommended service and features all Original Equipment parts, updated parts that were revised by Audi, and most importantly, the newly released JHM Mechanical Camshaft Adjuster Repair Kit!
We have put together 6 different levels of JHM-OEM Timing Chain Rebuild Kits to fit the individual needs of your repair:
– FULL PLUS:
This kit includes EVERYTHING you will need to complete your Timing Chain service. In addition to all of the o-rings, seals, and stretch bolts needed, you will also receive each of the 4 different chains that are required, 2x UPDATED Electrical Cam Adjuster Assemblies, 2x JHM Mechanical Camshaft Adjuster Repair Kits, all of the chain guides and tensioners required including an updated version of the guide that fails most often featuring additional reinforcements.
– FULL: **Hit “Add to Cart” at the bottom of this page to purchase this level of the kit. If you are interested in a different kit level, go back to the “Engine & Performance” or “Filters and Maintenance” Section and chose the kit you’d like to buy.**
This kit includes everything featured in the FULL PLUS Kit except for the Timing Chains: all o-rings, seals, and stretch bolts needed, 2x UPDATED Electrical Cam Adjuster Assemblies, 2x JHM Mechanical Camshaft Adjuster Repair Kits, all of the chain guides and tensioners required including an updated version of the guide that fails most often featuring additional reinforcements.
NOTE: There is a VIN split for one of the Cam Chain Tensioner Guides included in this kit. The split has to do with the design of one of the oil orifices on the back of the motor. Most 2004 B6-S4s and a small number of 2005 B6-S4s had an EARLY version of this part. You must check your VIN to be sure. Vehicles with VIN up to 4 200 000 will require an EARLY version of this Guide. Vehicles with VIN from 4 200 001 on will require the LATE version of this guide. B7-S4s all had the LATE version. Please confirm your VIN and select the version you need from the drop-down below.
